Of the many people around me, there is one person who has made the biggest impact in helping me be the person I am today. That person is my mother. Through her life, I have learned many lessons and come to value the things she loved most in her life. Learning about her through my siblings, I am able to emulate the same characteristics she once possessed. My mother was always a fighter. Keeping true to our last name, Guerreiro (“warrior” in Portuguese), my mother fought with breast cancer for the majority of my childhood. She underwent numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, only to discover at her five check-up that the cancer had not left her body. In 2003, on Christmas Day, I was forced to witness the hardest thing any ten year old has had to see; I watched my mother breathe her last breath as the fight in her slowly left and death overcame her. My mother has taught me many lessons. She created this drive in me. Her never-ending willingness to take matters into her own hands is one characteristic that I have learned to emulate. I strive for the best in all I do from school to relationships with family members. She taught me to be strong and that nothing is achieved without hard work.

Figuring out where I’m headed and thinking about the future has been the outcome of being able to understand the smaller parts of being a bicultural Mexican American young woman student. My goal of earning a higher education is to wrap up every paper I’ve written, every minute I’ve sat to listen to instructions, all the times I have fought for my family and community. Graduating as an educator or attorney will help me clear my path from unnecessary obstacles so I can contribute even more and demonstrate a progressive future.

I don’t know exactly how I’m going to reach my goals or where I will end up in the future, but I know college will guide me to a brighter future; a future where I can have a career and be successful. Seeing the negative path that others have followed has convinced me not to follow in their steps. I want to make something of myself, on the path of academic achievement and success. I look forward to achieving all my goals and dreams one day. My family, peers and community have all shaped the person I am today; a motivated, determined, bright teenager. They have all taught me a valuable lesson; knowledge and education is truly the key to success. They have showed me that I can become someone great if I pursue a higher education. That’s the person I want to be.
